The study of the karas by archaeologist Miqayel Badalyan, initiated and supported by SAROMM Grounds, has entered the competition of the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards in the Research category. For us, entering is already a reward: a vessel long overlooked at home will now be read by heritage specialists across Europe.
This October, Yerevan hosts the UN Biodiversity Conference, and SAROMM will be there on the 25th. Our CEO, Anoush Iskandaryan, and our vineyard manager, Sophie Cluesel, will take the stage to share what biodiversity in a vineyard looks like in practice.
Archaeologist Miqayel Badalyan’s study of the karas, the clay vessel that has held Armenian wine for millennia, is now published. Initiated and supported by SAROMM Grounds, the book is the result of a collaborative effort involving leading Armenian and international researchers. Bringing together historical, archaeological, scientific, and cultural perspectives, it explores the many dimensions of this traditional clay vessel, from its origins and historical evolution to its composition, ornamentation, and enduring place in Armenian winemaking.
